The horrors of the asylum are, unfortunately, memories from not so long ago. It was just in the early 1960s that Deinstitutionalisation had begun, and patients were turned lose into the streets. Photos show the warped perspective of the mentally ill. Short stories toss the reader into the strangeness of voices that exist only in our heads. Poetry dims the light of hope in the mind, that which comes after years without care. Absent Ventriloquist is a collection that forces us to examine mental health and learn to insure history does not repeat itself. This collection features photos by photographer Bryan Thompson of Graffiti Photographic, model Little Alice at the Che Correa Photography Studio in Appleton, WI. Short stories and poems written by Little Alice dregs up the darkness of the forgotten world of the asylum.

OSR (Ohio State Reformatory) is a siren’s call to the Cloud Orchid Magazine crew. Each year we would bring our rag-tag caravan to this unforgiving monument to human cruelty and further explore the depravities of man. The words of anger and despair that consume the wraith of a prisoner, Brooklyn Sky, shows how such a place can decimate even the strongest of people. Short stories beckon like the invisible voices in your head. Poetry plants questions that will leave you lying awake in bed. The darkness of the mind is something that is often forgotten in modern day America. However, it was only decades ago that asylums housed lost souls that, perhaps not crazy upon entry, were certainly broken down into the depths of insanity by the time they departed.
Photos capture that which a tortured mind can only see, and short stories and poetry reveal the ugly truth behind why these institutions were eventually shut down without recourse.
Oni – Whispers in the Snuff Box will send chills through even the most sane and sensible, revealing that we are all hiding ghosts in a darkness of our own.

Read our blog post about Synesthesia – Darkness
The creative mind marks one as “different,” and this is often met with confusion and friction from opposing forces to maintain the status quo. Being true to your talents and the craft that makes you “different” often come with the price of packing them up and allowing normalcy to blanket you, or fight against the current and carve out an island of your own making.
Little Alice faced animosity from peers and adults in places of authority all her life, working bit by bit to carve her own island. The resulting sacrifice was many dark hours where she questioned her purpose and her sanity. From these dark times she put pen to paper and wrote these scrawls. Some borne of heartache, some of typical teenage angst, but many of a more sinister nature; that which comes from when the world batters you with the idea that your raison d’être is merely a fool’s errand.
Synesthesia – Darkness is a collection that turns over the rocks, and reveals the ugly, creepy things we would rather leave hidden and buried.

Synesthesia-Depression-cover-R1

Read our blog post about Synesthesia – Depression
Mental illness is a battle we prefer to sweep under the rug. Admitting we are faulty is mortifying, and therapy is considered the defeated throes of a crazy person. Depression is often mocked and used as a general sentiment for narcissistic woe. But rather, those who find themselves under the thumb of Depression know that simple tasks are rendered into monstrous quests, full of foreboding and leave us quaking and unable to lift our heads. Little Alice has been diagnosed with a laundry list of conditions since the tender age of six. Her childhood and teenage years were fraught with authority figures who refused to try to understand, and only metered out punishment and alienation from her peers. This uphill battle to an adjusted, albeit far from “normal,” adulthood is documented in scraps of her nightmares, her ramblings, and her fears in Synesthesia – Depression. This collection showcases why mental illness is far from a crude joke, and demands awareness, lest more young minds fall prey to the insanity of insisting that they are indeed “fine.”
